Preparing your taxes is not a fun thing to do for most.  It requires a good understanding of the tax laws to take advantage of all your income tax options.

Believe it or not there are organizations and companies out there that will provide you with free tax help.  Some provide this service online and offer paid options with more services.  Others are volunteer organizations that provide a service to those who need low cost or no cost help with their income taxes.

Below we've listed a few things that will help you find the resources you need and help you get your taxes prepared.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly - The Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program provides free tax help to people aged 60 and older.  Trained volunteers from non-profit organizations provide free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation for senior citizens.  Volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

I-CAN!™ E-File - I-CAN!™ E-file can help you file your taxes for FREE. There is no income limit to use I-CAN!™ E-file. You can use I-CAN!™ E-file to file your Federal and state return if you lived and worked all year in one of the following states: California, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania or Montana.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program - The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $42,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing. Free Tax Help For Military Personnel - The military also has a strong Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) consists of the tax program coordinators for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.  The AFTC oversees the operation of the military tax programs worldwide, and serves as the main conduit for outreach by the IRS to military personnel and their families.
